More than 15,000 animals were adopted nationwide during this year’s Maddie’s Pet Adoption Days, and roughly 5,000 of those pets were adopted right here in the Bay Area.

Now we’re bringing you some of the local adoption stories!

Here is Papi with new mommy Lara on the beach! Papi was all smiles after finding his new forever home Saturday. Papi ended up back in the shelter after his first owner developed Alzheimer’s and had to move into a home. Lara says he’s already very well-trained, loves fetch, treats and meeting new people. Papi came from the NorCal Poodle Rescue, an East Bay organization that rescues more than 100 poodles each year.

As many know, Maddie’s Fund founder Dave Duffield and his wife started their charity in memory of their beloved Miniature Schnauzer, Maddie. At this year’s Maddie’s Pet Adoption Days, they spotted a Miniature Schnauzer mix that reminded them of Maddie! It was love at first sight when they laid eyes on little Jelly Bean. Jelly Bean came from East of Eden K-9 Rescue in Pleasanton.

Local artist Shaya adopted ten-month-old Jax, an American bull dog and boxer mix. Jax has unfortunately had some medical problems in his young life; he was in a cast for eight weeks and will likely develop arthritis when he’s older. But that couldn’t dissuade Shaya, who just loves this sweet boy! Jax was being housed at Berkeley Animal Care Services. Thanks to photographer Nancy Rubin for snapping this sweet moment.

Nala was very timid at first but took a shine to her new parents, who were thankful to Maddie’s Fund and to Animal Rescue Recon in Antioch, which rescued the pup. Nala’s new parents showed their appreciation for Maddie’s Fund for helping them find their newest furry family member!
